SIIGHTS have dropped new single ‘Words’, which is available now on Insanity Records. It’s the second preview of the band’s upcoming EP, which was introduced late last year by ‘Miss You’ and follows tour-dates with the likes of Lana Del Rey, Dylan, and Griff. SIIGHTS’ headline tour kicks off later this month, with a London show at The Grace on February 6th and dual homecoming-shows in Dublin and Glasgow respectively also confirmed.
‘Words’ chronicles the talking stage of a new romance - the struggle to say how you feel amidst DM-culture, and the difficulties (but also, the liberation) of potentially being understood by someone else. Like much of SIIGHTS’ upcoming project, it’s as much a leap of faith as it is ultimately about backing yourself, with the DIY duo’s assured production recalling the alt-pop influence of Fleetwood Mac or Muna even when ‘Words’ fail us.
For SIIGHTS, it all comes back to authentic connection. It was there on first meeting between Dubliner Mia and Glasgow’s Toni during fish-out-of-water session work in LA, and it runs throughout the band’s soaring work together (not to mention the close bond such lyrical candour has formed with their listeners). Following the Somewhere Between Lost and Found EP and anthemic lead single ‘Fake It’, SIIGHTS’ new material promises a bigger, tougher and at times more raw sound: created between the US, Stockholm, London and the girls’ home-studio, songs set themes of growth, grief (‘Miss You’) and radical self-acceptance into universal but deeply personal pop.
Drawing on influences ranging from the classic rock of The Runaways to new-gen heroes like HAIM, there is clearly more to SIIGHTS than meets the eye. The distinctive double-I represents their two identities, but also hint at deeper allusions across the group’s lives (whether foresight, hindsight, or the broadened horizons they long to make as female producers and multi-instrumentalists in the creative industries). The band’s next EP is also set to feature SIIGHTS’ first collaborations, with Grammy Award-winning producer Jenn Decilveo (The Strokes, Miley Cyrus) and platinum-selling Bastian Langebaek (Nilüfer Yanya, Anna of the North). Mixing timeless ideas of mortality, surrender and self-care into the empowered model of a new wave of bands, SIIGHTS’ continued quest for something beyond ‘Words’ makes them one of the UK’s most refreshing propositions for the year ahead.
